Artist Statement

I am conscious of good design in a painting. Composition in landscape and still life paintings is essential to a good design, an arresting pattern of light, dark and color usage, and a pleasing arrangement.

In my studio, I design a still life with items to develop a theme, whether from my collection or from flea markets adding fruit, flowers or vegetables.

When painting outdoors, I look for landscapes that again provide a pleasing composition with patterns and color interest. The same elements of art apply using light, shadow, shape, composition and color guiding my emotional response and my selection of a focal point and horizon line. The most challenging aspects of painting landscapes are the constantly changing light, shadows and the weather.

In quoting Max Ginsburg, "I choose to paint realistically because I believe realism is truth and truth is beauty. I derive an aesthetic pleasure in skillfully doing realistic drawings and paintings. I believe that realism can communicate ideas strongly and it is extremely important to me." I could not have said this more succinctly.
